What is Allergy

An Allergy is a condition in which the immune system overreacts to a substance which is otherwise normally harmless. This is called an allergen. Such overreaction causes symptoms like sneezing, itching, swelling or difficulty in breathing. The common allergens include pet dander, certain foods, pollen and insect stings.

Who Gets Allergies?

They can affect just about anyone, regardless of age or background. They occur when the immune system of a person overreacts to an allergen which is usually harmless.

Allergies are also bound to get transferred genetically. If you have a family history of allergies, then it is more likely that you get affected too. However, environmental exposures and factors also contribute.

At What Age Do Allergies Start?
Allergies can start at any age. Most often they begin during childhood. Majority of people develop their first allergies in infancy or early childhood. It is also common for allergies to appear later in life, sometimes in adulthood. The timing though varies from person to person.
Are Allergies Considered To Be Chronic?
Yes, allergies are considered to be a chronic condition. After you have an allergy, it tends to be a long-term issue which requires ongoing management. While the symptoms are controlled with medication, the tendency to have allergic reactions generally remains throughout life.
What Are Some Things That Trigger Allergies?
Allergy triggers vary vastly and include – dust mites, pollen, particular medications, mold spores, pet dander and environmental pollutants.
Can Infections Trigger The Condition Of Allergies?
Infections themselves do not generally cause allergies, but they exacerbate pre-existing allergic conditions. For instance, a respiratory infection might worsen symptoms of asthma or make hay fever more intense. Additionally, there is also research which suggests that a few viral infections during early childhood influence the development of allergies.
How Are Allergies Diagnosed?

Diagnosis usually involves a physical examination, medical history review, and allergy tests, such as skin prick tests or blood tests.
